I'm all for privatizing the Saskatchewan liquor stores. I'm ok with having grocery stores sell booze and convenience stores open later being allowed to sell liquor but I'm not real sure about the provinces announced legalization of home delivery of alcohol.
This is being sold as a great convenience for the public but is it really or is it just another money grab by the government? First of all will these delivery drivers have to be licensed in order to deliver booze? I understand some provinces and states charge couriers a liquor delivery license as much as $1000 per year. How many will there be and what kind of change will that bring the government?
Then theres the regulation side of it. Who controls who's receiving the booze ? Will the couriers merrily distribute booze to a gang of seventh graders just having a party ? Will they be asking for id's at every home they visit ?
And what about the liability factor? We hear of bars being charged for overserving patrons so what happens when booze is delivered to a home and someone is injured or in an accident? Will the courier be liable or the government for issuing the license?
Why does the Saskatchewan government continue to have to run and control liquor board stores? Privatize them ! If theres a demand, they will stay open as late as they have customers and like any good business practise, the market will decide.
Till then where is that Dial A Drunk number ?
