I have to admit I am having a hard time figuring this one out.
In early July 2008, the town of Wynyard, Saskatchewan got a new RCMP sergeant named Ron Russell. Subsequently the new sergeant was asked by town council to toughen up on liquor laws, driving while impaired, public intoxication and so forth in the town and area. One councillor apparently even asked for increased bar patrols to make sure patrons were not being over served. The new RCMP Sergeant complied and the crackdown began. As a result impaired driving citations have risen from 28 - 47 snf some tickets for public intoxication have been served. Everyone's happy right?
Well apparently not. A group of bar owners and their supporters have approached town council and complained about over policing and the crackdown.
Apparently public safety and protection is not a concern. Profits are. Business is down and that has the bar owners upset.
This is hard to beleive. Even harder to believe that these bar owners would go public with this. Its even caught the attention of MADD, Mothers Against Drunk Driver who want to present Sergeant Russell with a special award.
Good for them and good for the Wynyard RCMP. It appears RCMP got their man in Wynyard and got a good one. What I can't figure out is the quietness of the RCMP, whether it be Regina or Ottawa. They should be standing behind and commending their Wynyard RCMP for a job well done. I mean this story has been all over the media and no comment from the RCMP. Job well done Sergeant Russell. Time for Bubba and the bar owners to let it go.
