You have to wonder what head coach Mike Kelly is thinking as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers sign cornerback Pacman Jones to a Canadian Football League contract. Pacman arrives in Winnipeg as arguably the second most notorious player in the National Football League on the bad boy depth chart behind only quarterback Michael Vick.
A Winnipeg reporter took on a tough assignment yesterday visiting Winnipeg strip clubs and interviewing strippers on what they thought of Pacman arriving in Winnipeg. Pacman is most famous for "making it rain", a stunt where he visits strip clubs and
throws thousands of dollars to the dancers. On one infamous occasion a man ended up getting shot resulting in a one year suspension from the NFL. The suspension is over but apparently loud mouth Mike and the Blue Bombers are the only football team in North American to be interested in the Pacman. Pacman has been arrested at least six times and although he has speed to burn as a kick returner the biggest question might be, is Pacman agile and versatile enough to get by the border guards and on his way to Winnipeg? There's little doubt the Bombers could use an impact player and little doubt that the talented Pacman Jones can make an impact. But you have to remember Mike Kelly's comment as the Bombers parted company with Jason Armstead, another player with a reputation. Something to the extent of "getting rid of A__holes on the team. Add to Kelly's list tempermental quarterback Michael Bishop and there may be some interesting days ahead for the Bombers.
Oh and as for those strippers interviewed by the Winnipeg reporter. Most of them had never heard of Pacman Jones but all said he would be welcome in their club with one club owner saying they would even prepare the VIP room for him.
Meantime the Saskatchewan RoughRiders added Jason Armstead and you have to wonder about that. Armstead comes with his own set of baggage including allegations of assault against a girl friend. Apparently that doesn't bother the Riders either, nor does the fact that they traded Armstead away because of his penchant for fumbling the ball.
Should make for a couple of interesting weeks in the CFL with the Bombers and Riders meeting in back to back games.
Bishop starting at quarterback for the Bombers, Pacman, a big maybe as being in the lineup for Winnipeg, and Armstead back returning kicks for the Riders. This Canadian Football League is an interesting place.
